If you’re craving for Hong Kong French toast but also want a bowl of satay beef noodle soup– don’t worry. I got you. Look no further than Hong Kong satay beef French toast.
This unconventional combination is a fusion dish that features tender beef marinated in a flavourful satay sauce, sandwiched between two slices of crispy Hong Kong-style French toast.
It sounds like a weird combo, but trust me– it’s a perfect balance of savoury and spicy from the satay sauce and sweetness of the condensed milk and honey. You can deep-fry your toast to create the gorgeous crispy and golden exterior, or you can air-fry like I did. You can also choose to pan-fry your toasts. Do whatever you like!
ingredients to making hong kong satay beef french toast:
- 200g beef, thinly sliced
- 1/2 onion, sliced
- 4 slices of white bread
- 2 tsp dark soy sauce
satay beef marinade:
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1.5 tbsp Satay paste (best brand satay sauce)
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
- 1 tbsp light soy sauce
- 1 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp white pepper
- 3 tbsp water
egg mixture:
- 3 eggs
- 2 tbsp milk (or evaporated milk)
- a pinch of salt
toppings:
- a knob of butter
- honey
- condensed milk
steps:
- Combine satay beef marinade ingredients with thinly sliced beef. Marinate the beef for at least 1 hour.
- Heat oil in a pan over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and stir-fry until softened.
- Add marinated beef and stir-fry until the beef is around 70% cooked (as we will continue to cook the beef later in the air-fryer). Add dark soy sauce to give it some colour. Remove and set aside.
- In a shallow dish, whisk in eggs, milk and a pinch of salt. Stack two slices of bread on top of each other, then dip the all sides of the bread into the egg mixture.
- Brush some vegetable oil on baking paper and lay it in your air-fryer. Add one slide of bread (with clean side of the bread facing up), and spoon some satay beef on top. Then stack with the other slice of bread (egg-dipped side facing up). Gently press the edges down to stick both slices of bread together.
- At 180˚C / 356˚F, air-fry for 6-7 minutes on one side. Gently flip the toast and air-fry for another 6-7 minutes (~14 minutes total).
- Serve with a knob of butter, honey and condensed milk. Enjoy!
tips to making the BEST hong kong satay beef french toast:
- Marinate the beef for at least 1 hour. This ensures enough time for the beef to absorb the marinade and taste a lot more flavourful.
- Only cook your beef until ~70% cooked. Since you will continue to cook the beef in the air-fryer, it’s important not to cook your beef completely when stir-frying.
- Do not over-soak your bread! You don’t want the bread to be soggy. Soak all sides briefly.
