Beef Pepper Rice (Pepper Lunch inspired

Pepper Lunch is a Japanese fast-food chain restaurant famous for their beef pepper rice. Their beef pepper rice typically consists of sizzling hot grilled beef slices served with a bed of rice, with a generous sprinkle of black pepper, corn and green onions. This dish often comes with a special garlic and honey soy sauce to drizzle over the meat and rice.

Pepper Lunch really reminds me of my teenage years. I used to eat this beef pepper rice it all the time after school. It’s such a quick and satisfying meal.

The great thing about this dish is that it’s so quick and easy to make at home! All you need is some thinly sliced beef, rice, black pepper, your favourite veggies (such as corn or onions), and most importantly– the special sauce.

Whether you’re a student looking for a quick lunch to make or a busy adult, this is a perfect lunch or dinner option to make.

ingredients for making Pepper Lunch’s beef pepper rice:

  • 1 serving cooked short-grain rice
  • 200g thinly sliced beef (or any protein of your choice)
  • 1/3 cup canned or fresh corn
  • a knob of butter
  • handful of chopped green onions
  • go crazy on black pepper because… it’s Pepper Lunch 🙂

~sauce:

  • 1/4 cup light soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 4 gloves garlic, finely minced
  • 1-2 shallots, diced
  • 1/2 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup water + 2 tsp cornstarch
  • 1 tsp cooking oil

steps:

  1. Prepare ingredients by washing and cooking rice; chopping garlic, shallots, ginger and green onion.
  2. To make the sauce: In a saucepan, heat some oil and sauté shallots, garlic and ginger on medium heat until golden and fragrant. Then add light soy sauce, honey and black pepper. Simmer for 1-2 minutes, then add cornstarch slurry and heat until sauce is thickened. Blend sauce until smooth (optional).
  3. Heat a pan/ hot plate on medium-high. Drizzle with cooking oil, then add rice in the middle, sliced beef around side of the pan, and top with corn, green onions, a knob of butter and black pepper.
  4. Once the beef starts to cook and sizzle, pour the sauce and mix everything together. Enjoy!
