what does daigasikfaan mean?

dai ga sik faan (大家食飯) means ‘everyone, let’s eat!’ in Cantonese. In our culture, we usually say sik faan! before having a meal with our friends and family.

hey! i’m karen.

你好! Lei ho! My name is Karen and I was born and raised in Hong Kong for the first 18 years of my life. Growing up in a city, I enjoyed the perks of having delicious food accessible anytime anywhere. This meant that I only discovered my passion for cooking when I left home and moved to the UK for university. The feeling of homesickness and gradually losing a sense of belonging inspired me to learn how to cook foods I enjoyed eating growing up– fulfilling my cravings for bits and pieces of my childhood.

Despite the prevalent and ongoing changes in Hong Kong, there is one thing about Hong Kong culture that will always remain the same– the food. No matter how much a place you call home has transformed, the food you grew up eating will always hold sentimental values and remind you of where you came from.

Hence, I started this blog in hopes of reaching fellow HKers living abroad who feel a little homesick and want to recreate a taste of familiarity in their own kitchen. I also hope to inspire anyone who has interest in Asian recipes in general. Simply put– I wish to share my love for Hong Kong and other Asian foods by creating easy, simple and accessible recipes.

If you read all the way til the end– thank you. I am so grateful to every one of you who have engaged with my content and followed my recipes. Your kind messages and support only motivates me to continue this journey of sharing insightful, educational and entertaining content. I hope my blog and short videos inspire you in some way!
