hong kong style french toast

The Hong Kong style French toast is a classic breakfast found in almost all cha chaan teng (茶餐廳, a local Hong Kong cafe). It is typically made with bread layered with peanut butter, coated with egg and evaporated milk, deep-fried until golden brown and crispy, then topped with a knob of butter along with condensed milk, honey or syrup.

However, since we’ll be making this at home, instead of deep-frying (which you can, by all means), you can shallow-fry the toast with an inch layer of oil. Alternatively, you can pan-fry with a knob of butter, if you don’t want to use too much oil.

alternative to peanut butter spread:

  • Instead of peanut butter, you can use any type of nut butter you prefer. You can also use Nutella, jam, honey, etc.

tips for making hong kong style french toast:

  • Cutting off the bread crusts makes it easier to soak all the edges of the bread with egg wash.
  • To check if the oil is hot enough for frying, stick a wooden chopstick/ wooden skewer into the oil. If bubbles appear around the stick, then the oil is ready.
  • Enjoy this toast with your breakfast tea or coffee!

Ingredients

  • 3 slices of bread (or 2 slices of thick-cut bread)

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 tbsp milk (or evaporated milk)

  • Peanut butter (to taste)

  • Cooking oil (enough to cover an inch of your pan)

  • 1 knob of butter

  • Drizzle of honey/ maple syrup/ condensed milk

Directions

  • Spread peanut butter on two slices of bread, sandwich them together and slice off the crusts.
  • In a shallow bowl, thoroughly beat together the eggs and milk.
  • Dip the bread into the egg mixture and soak each side for around 5 seconds.
  • Add an inch layer of oil into a pan. On medium-high heat, first fry the edges of the toast, then fry each side for 1-2 minutes or until golden brown [To pan-fry: Add 1 tbsp of butter to the pan and fry each side for 2-3 minutes on medium-low heat].
  • Serve with a knob of butter and drizzle with honey, maple syrup or condensed milk. Enjoy!

Notes

  • You can check if the oil is hot enough for frying by sticking a wooden chopstick into the oil, if bubbles start forming at the tip then it’s ready.
